New Products and Players Will Drive Biochip Market Towards A Billion In Sales By 2005

The worldwide biochip market, consisting of DNA chips, lab chips and protein chips, will reach $950 million in sales by 2005 according to a new study from BioInsights. New products and new players will drive the market at a compound annual growth rate of 33%. Although Affymetrix, Caliper and Ciphergen currently dominate the market, emerging companies, such as Clinical Micro Sensors, ACLARA BioSciences and Phylos, will garner increased market share as customers look for low-cost and versatile products to meet their needs for new applications.

DNA chips will retain the largest share of the biochip market reaching sales of $725 million in 2005, but, growth will slow after 2003 as customers become more selective in their use of DNA chips. Lab chips are likely to find use in the broadest types of assays and are poised to reach $157 million in sales by 2005. In addition, there is considerable demand for protein chips, but technical limitations will hinder the growth of the market.

Growth of the biochips market is tied to the expansion of multiple applications. Expression profiling will remain the leading application of biochips with a market of $434 million in 2005. Pharmacogenomics will exhibit the greatest compound annual growth rate of 74% from 2000 to 2005. Toxicology screening will expand from demand to identify potentially hazardous drugs as early as possible in the drug development process. DNA sequencing applications will benefit from increasing efforts to re-sequence data from the Human Genome Project. And the diagnostics market for biochips is set to emerge after 2004.
